Winter brings chilly weather—and along with it, a surge in cold and flu cases. And as most moms know, kids are particularly susceptible due to their developing immune systems and increased exposure to germs in shared spaces like schools and play areas. If you’re like me, that means that your kids are sick every other week. Luckily, I have a few flu seasons under my belt now and am sharing tops on how to help your family stay healthy this winter.
How To Keep Your Kids Healthy
Unfortunately, keeping your children in a germ-free bubble is not an option, but there are ways to keep your children healthy.
1. Practicing Good Hygiene
Establishing good hygiene habits is a powerful way to protect kids from the spread of germs. This can be done by the following:
Handwashing: I try and make it a habit that my kids wash their hands before and after using the restroom, after playing outside and before eating. I will take what I can get but aim for at least 20-30 seconds of washing with soap.
Covering Coughs and Sneezes: Nothing is worse than your kid spewing germs everywhere as they cough, so try and share with them how to cough or sneeze in their elbow to avoid spreading germs.
Avoid Sharing Utensils: Sometimes it’s inevitable, but sharing cups, straws, or utensils even with friends should be avoided.
2. Dress For the Winter
It can be a challenge getting your kids to wear a coat and hat, but proper clothing is key to keeping kids warm and comfortable during winter months.
Layer Clothing: Dress your child in layers to provide warmth and flexibility. This allows them to adjust easily between chilly outdoor temperatures and heated indoor spaces. Don’t forget hats, gloves, and scarves to protect their head, hands, and neck from the cold.
3. Create a Healthy Environment
A healthy home environment can significantly reduce the spread of illnesses, especially if you have multiple children at home.
Use a Humidifier: Combat dry winter air by using a humidifier to maintain moisture levels. This helps prevent sore throats, dry skin, and irritated nasal passages making it easier for kids to breathe comfortably.
Disinfect Regularly: Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces like toys, doorknobs, and tabletops to eliminate lingering germs and reduce the risk of infection.
