Of all the different types of warts caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), plantar warts are among the most common and often among the most uncomfortable. These warts typically develop on the pressure-bearing areas of the feet, such as the heels and balls of the feet, where walking and standing can make them particularly painful.
Plantar warts often appear as rough, grainy growths and may contain tiny black specks, which are actually small, clotted blood vessels. Like palmar warts that occur on the hands and fingers, plantar warts are named for the area where they develop. Simply put, plantar warts form on the soles of the feet.
Although plantar warts are noncancerous skin growths, many people become concerned when they first notice one. Fortunately, plantar warts are generally harmless. In some cases, they may even resolve on their own as the body's immune system responds to the virus, although this process can take months or even years.
Because plantar warts develop on the bottom of the foot, they are often pushed inward by the pressure of walking. As a result, they may appear flatter than other types of warts while still causing discomfort beneath the skin's surface.
How Do Plantar Warts Spread?
Like other warts caused by HPV, plantar warts spread through contact with the virus. This can occur through direct skin-to-skin contact or indirectly through contaminated surfaces.
For example, a child may come into contact with the virus on shared playground equipment, gym floors, or locker room surfaces. Public showers, pool decks, and communal changing areas are often considered common places where HPV exposure can occur, particularly when walking barefoot.
However, newer research suggests that prolonged exposure to the virus—such as living with someone who has warts—may play a greater role in transmission than previously believed. Regardless of where exposure occurs, keeping feet protected in public spaces and practicing good hygiene can help reduce risk.
Conditions That Can Be Mistaken for Plantar Warts. Several skin conditions can resemble plantar warts.
- Skin cancer, while far less common, may occasionally be mistaken for a wart and should always be evaluated by a healthcare professional if there is uncertainty.
- Corns are another common look-alike. Unlike warts, corns are areas of thickened skin that develop due to repeated pressure or friction.
- Skin tags may also be confused with warts, although they are typically softer and attached to the skin by a small stalk. Skin tags most commonly appear on the neck, underarms, eyelids, and skin folds rather than on the feet.
How Do You Treat Plantar Warts?
There are several options available for managing plantar warts. Conventional treatments often include salicylic acid preparations, which gradually soften and remove layers of affected skin. Prescription treatments may also be recommended in certain cases.
Some people try duct tape occlusion therapy, which involves covering the wart for extended periods. Others opt for cryotherapy, a procedure that uses liquid nitrogen to freeze the wart tissue.
