What causes warts and how do warts spread? Before modern medicine advanced our understanding of skin conditions, many people believed frogs and toads were responsible for these common growths, likely because of the small bumps that cover their skin. Today, we know that warts are caused by certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). While it has long been understood that HPV can spread through contact with infected skin, public pools, locker rooms, and communal showers have often been labeled as wart "hotspots." But are these places really the primary source of wart transmission?
The study we're focusing on today, conducted by researchers at Leiden University Medical Center, tracked children over a one-year period and revealed some surprising insights. One of the most notable findings was that the greatest risk factor for developing warts wasn't public pools or showers—it was exposure at home. Children with family members who had warts were more than twice as likely to develop them themselves.
Why? The researchers found that a child's risk was most strongly influenced by the duration and frequency of exposure to the virus. Children may only spend a few minutes walking through a public shower or pool area, but they spend hours every day at home with family members. Prolonged exposure appears to be a much more significant factor than brief encounters in public spaces.
Warts are extremely common in the Netherlands, where this study took place. In fact, approximately one in three primary school children already has warts. This leaves many parents searching for safe and effective ways to support healthy skin and address unwanted warts before they spread to siblings or classmates.
The study collected data from approximately 1,000 children between the ages of 4 and 12. Each child was examined by researchers and asked questions about contact with individuals who had warts, as well as participation in traditionally "high-risk" activities such as swimming or walking barefoot during sports. About 30% of the children developed warts during the year-long study, and children who already had warts at the beginning of the study were more likely to develop additional warts over time.
What about genetics? Could a higher likelihood of developing warts from family members simply reflect inherited susceptibility? The researchers considered this possibility but ultimately concluded that prolonged exposure was the stronger explanation. The influence of both home and school environments strongly suggested that close, repeated contact plays the largest role in wart transmission.
So, what does this mean for prevention? Many public health recommendations focus on wearing sandals in communal showers and covering warts while visiting pools. While those practices remain helpful, this study suggests that preventing the spread of warts at home may be even more important. Keeping warts covered and avoiding direct contact with affected areas can help reduce the likelihood of spreading the virus to family members.
